We are excited about this novel program that is designed to elevate the impact that shop operators have on their clients’ mental well-being. This program is essential because Black men and women in the U.S. have increased mental health challenges worsened by COVID-19 and daily social injustices.
There are so many barriers to getting the mental health services they need, including stigma with mental illness, distrust of the healthcare system, lack of providers who look like them, and not knowing about available treatments that can help.
Fortunately, our barbers and stylists are trusted members of the Black community. They provide a sacred space where their clients often share mental health challenges–depression, anxiety, family stress or drug/alcohol problems. As participants in Project HairCare, they will learn skills and be provided tools and resources to help their clients achieve mental wellness and improve overall health.
